CSH | Our Rabbi
He joined the family of Congregation Shirat Hayam in 2013. Howard was a pulpit rabbi in Vermont, the interim Dean of Jewish Life at the American Hebrew Academy, interim rabbi at OrHatzafon in Fairbanks Alaska, and a prison chaplain. Prior to entering the rabbinate he was an outdoor educator with Outward Bound.
Howard is a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and a member in good standing in the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association and Ohalah: the Association of Rabbis for Jewish Renewal.
In addition to his "traditional" rabbinic work he was the owner/senior guide of Burning Bush Adventures. BBA combines back country experiences with Judaism.
In 2001 he became chaplain of the Bennington Fire Department and also trained to be a firefighter. He retired 20 years later as the Chief.
He also has a Life Coaching practice called Pemsikwa Life Coaching.
When asked what connects firefighting, rabbi-ing, wilderness guiding and coaching Howard responsds. It is is simple: they all involve service to others; holy work, and building meaningful, trust based relationships. Plus they are all a lot of fun.
